VW Type 2 Camper

The VW Type 2 Camper was the 2nd automotive line introduced by Volkswagen, German automaker. It is a van which was introduced in 1950. Volkswagen Type 2 is initially based on Volkswagen’s first model which was also known as the “Beetle”. The later production is the precursor of passenger vans and modern cargo. The Type 2 seeded various imitators both in the Europe and United States including the Dodge A100, Ford Econoline, and the Chevrolet Corvan.

VW Type 2 was available as follows:

1. Delivery van with no rear seats or side windows
2. Van with removable rear seats and side windows
3. Delivery van with raised roof
4. Van with more relaxed interior evocative of passenger cars
5. Van with cloth sunroof and skylight windows
6. Double Cab, flatbed truck, with two rows of seats
7. Single Cab, flatbed truck, also obtainable with wider load bed
8. Camping Van
9. Semi-camping Van; also used as passenger car or transporter.

There were more of third party alterations available apart from factory variants. The idea for the VW Type 2 is accredited to Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon. Type 2 was one of the first commercial vehicles in which the driver was seated above the front wheel.
